Travel days - Panajachel to Guatemala City to Flores

Yesterday and today were spent travelling - yesterday in a shuttle van driving from Panajachel to Guatemala City, and today a plane ride from Guatemala City north to Flores. Guatemala City is the major hub for air travel in Guatemala - a place to maybe spend the night en route to somewhere else! It’s big, crowded, noisy and not particularly a safe place to wander around and explore on foot. We didn’t stay long - our flight to Flores in the morning allowed all afternoon today to explore this lake side town. It’s situated on Lake Petén Itzá and by having an airport is strategic in a visit to the archaeological site of Tikal about 64km away. We will go there in two days, in the meantime, tomorrow we’ll go to another important Maya site - Yaxha.

We’re staying in the ‘old town’ where the streets are so colourful and attractive, even with their super narrow sidewalks and cobblestone roadways

The pathway is flooded… not too unusual we were told…

The water is really high right now in the lake, there are no rivers flowing out and the rains seem to have been heavy recently
