South Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

It’s hard to believe we’ve been able to cover so much ground and seen so much wildlife in its natural habitat over these past couple of days. It’s been fast paced and exhilarating. Clause, our guide, has been insistent we can’t go home without seeing the ‘big five’ - Lion, Cape Buffalo, Leopard, Elephant, and Black Rhinoceros… Today, we accomplished our mission! The rhino sighting was pretty special, we actually saw three - off in the distance (as with most of the animals we saw today), but we saw them.

We spent the day yesterday driving in the southern Serengeti, crisscrossing the savanna. It’s vast enough that driving off-road is allowed so we could get close to many of the animals who don’t seem phased by the tourists as long as we stay in our vehicles - pretty crazy! Today we drove in a different direction taking us into the Ngorongoro crater. It’s a huge flat grasslands thought to have been created about 2.5 million years ago when a volcano erupted creating a crater. It’s now a beautiful lush savanna, home to an abundance of different species, both fauna and flora. We ended our day in the town of Karatu in a peaceful lodge with lush tropical surroundings - Eileen’s Trees lodge.

February seems to be a good month to be here, little rain but not too dry either, so far we’ve been really lucky…

Early morning Hippopotamus rally! They would show their faces briefly but it was so fun to watch these huge creatures!

Herds of wildebeests on their annual migration (calving season)

Lunch! One of the few times during the day we could be out of our vehicle…

It was amazing how close we could get to this lion without him seeming to be bothered (I’m in the Toyota, but still!)

So majestic…

Giraffes standing guard for each other as they each get a drink

If you look closely you can see the lion sleeping in the tree…

Our accommodation for two nights it was interesting to feel so safe yet hear the lions in the night!

Sunrise…

Making new friends, learning new ways of cooking lamb!

Clause spotted some Maasai men cooking some meat over an open fire and we stopped to check it out

A Black Rhinoceros! He was quite a ways away, but with binoculars we were able to watch him for quite a while

A very feisty hyena looking for his lunch…

It’s amazing to see so many animals cooperate and share the savanna peacefully

An Eland antelope cruising with his herd

A wary warthog grabbing a drink at a communal watering hole

This Toyota with its pop-up top took us a incredible distance over some very rough and dusty roads

A Cape Buffalo, not the least bit bothered we were so focused on him

Being on the floor of the crater feels like being in a huge flat bottomed bowl with steep sides
