Mexico City 🇲🇽
Yesterday (Monday) we flew from Villahermosa to Mexico City arriving with enough time left in the day to get ourselves slightly oriented - this is the biggest city I’ve ever been in! We’re staying in an old hotel in the ‘historic centre’, within walking distance to several of the places we hope to see.
This morning we visited the National Palace which is open to the public free of charge. To control the number of visitors tickets are allotted for specific times of entry and a tour guide is provided. The system worked extremely well so the visit didn’t feel crowded. The main attraction for most people are the incredible Diego Rivera murals lining the walls of the cloistered area surrounding the inner plaza. The murals painted between 1929 and 1935 depict Mexico’s history - telling a fascinating story. We spent much of the afternoon exploring on foot and getting familiar with the metro system. The city moves fast and there’s so much to see just wandering!
This evening we went to the Arena México to watch ‘Lucha Libre’ - a spectacular acrobatic wrestling event. It’s one of the most popular and exciting spectator sports in Mexico, this evening was no exception! Everyone has their favourite ‘luchadore’ who ‘battles’ it out with their opponent doing flips, jumps, flinging themselves off the ropes, etc… There is a lot of cheering as the crowd gets pumped, really quite exciting and funny!
Tomorrow we’ll head to Chapultepec Park where the Archaeological Museum is.
