Homeward bound!
Yesterday we needed a bit of a ‘down’ day - the heat, elevation, and general stress of travel was catching up to us. We decided to get a later start and focused our activity within the walking distance of our hotel. We hadn’t been to the Palacio de Bellas Artes yet so that was an easy choice, not too far away. It’s an imposing structure that hosts many different cultural events, exhibits, and most prominent are the immense murals that line the walls.
The streets were filled with people, many carrying flags and placards, the longer we were out the louder the crowds got. As it turned out it was the first day of campaigning for the upcoming presidential election. The crowds grew as the day wore on, but we felt safe enough despite all the frenzy. It’s common in the ‘Historico Centro’ to witness all kinds of demonstrations, we were glad this one was so peaceful!
Today, very early Saturday morning, we said goodbye to Mexico City as our taxi drove us to the airport at 3:30am. The flights to Victoria were on time, without hassles and we arrived home safely in the late afternoon. It was a good adventure seeing so many intriguing sites; it certainly satisfied our hopes to meet the challenge of independent travelling!
