Flores to Yaxhá to Tikal

The internet connection over the past few days has been really hit and miss, mostly miss for me! Sunday morning we woke to light rain in Flores, not too persistent, just enough to dampen the streets, the air was warm. In the afternoon we took a ‘collectivo’ (shuttle van) to the Maya ruins of Yaxhá, about an hour’s drive from town. The rain held off and we had a good excursion (accompanied by a local guide) exploring the site.
Monday we got an early start, boarded another ‘colectivo’ and made our way to Tikal. Tikal (now a national park)is one of the largest archeological sites and urban centres of the ancient Maya civilization. We’ve been staying at a small hotel in the park within walking distance of the temples.
Today we travel back to Flores where we’ll spend another two nights. These past few days exploring Tikal have been a highlight of our trip - temples so amazingly engineered and the peacefulness of the environment.

Without a person (me!) the massiveness is hard to grasp…
A few have stairways to the top, others we scramble up the stone face…
